This week we are watching a wonderful video on dodging and burning!! It can change the look on your image.

It is written for photoshop but all can be done in elements by just filling the two layers (dodge and burn)with 50% grey.

I read an article the other day about using the dodge and burn tool on a black and white cloud image. The final image was striking!!

I like this. I believe I'm having more success working on a separate 50% Gray layer than I have had using the tool on an image. Again, I wanted to use this on two different types of images...





I need more practice to avoid the "halo look" around the heads in the second image. Maybe a higher Gaus Blur setting would help (?). I didn't use the saturation layer on either of these. Well, I used it but didn't like the look so I trashed that layer.

I think both photos are much better with dodge and burn. About halos, I find it difficult to control them unless you use a mask. Dodging and burning may not be the best way in this part of the image. Selecting the brick background and copying on a multiply blank layer could do the burning. Dodging and burning does not work well with urban landscapes with geometrical patterns. You can see I had the same problem in my attempt. I was too lazy to mask!

Rusty... I love your outside shot!! Subtle, yet changed the look of the image.

The people shot, I wonder if something like that, would be better served with the paint with light technique.

You are correct, Michel, about a mask. I didn't think about that when I was doing it -- too focused on the tutorial Obviously didn't have that problem with the first one due to the nature of the image. I liked the way this changed your B&W image. Did you do all of your adjustments, including dodge/burn, on the color image and then convert to B&W? Or, did you dodge/burn after conversion?

Kimi, I think you are also correct - paint with light would probably have been easier.
