Rusty wrote:You are correct, Michel, about a mask. I didn't think about that when I was doing it -- too focused on the tutorial :D Obviously didn't have that problem with the first one due to the nature of the image. I liked the way this changed your B&W image. Did you do all of your adjustments, including dodge/burn, on the color image and then convert to B&W? Or, did you dodge/burn after conversion?

Kimi, I think you are also correct - paint with light would probably have been easier.

Suzi -- yours is wonderful.

Rusty,
I was not sure at first if should target B&W or color... So, I created first a standard Black to white gradient adjustment layer which I toggled off to try the tutorial on the colour image. When dodging and burning was done, I toggled the gradient layer on, which sounded promising. I tweaked the gradient by adding a middle tab and moving the auxiliary tabs a little:

Here's my homework. I knew about the dodge and burn layers, but I did not know about saturation. This was a learning experience.

I tried to draw attention to the Cadillac emblem and the hood ornament.

Bill,

I vaguely remember that (from the days before we worried about impaling people on the hood ornament). What year is that?

The desat of the background was very effective; the hood ornament looks great with just the bit of gold color. I would have left the crest more like the original; do you think it's a bit too bright in the after?
