I was not sure at first if should target B&W or color... So, I created first a standard Black to white gradient adjustment layer which I toggled off to try the tutorial on the colour image. When dodging and burning was done, I toggled the gradient layer on, which sounded promising. I tweaked the gradient by adding a middle tab and moving the auxiliary tabs a little:
