Rose part two. This rose is called double delight for obvious reasons. I selected the center of the rose with a 125 pixel feather. Then I added the high pass sharpening.

We can fall into a rut, at least I do. I was aware of High Pass sharpening but seemed to get away from it. I tend to "automatically" go to USM with settings of 20-60-0 that I learned as a de-fog device. That works very, very fine for muddy or hazy images. This homework reminded me of High Pass and, with some experimentation, reveals significant differences.

I have to look at 100% to clearly see what's happening:

When you look at the water coming over the dam and at the wings of the dragonfly, the edge sharpening from High Pass is clearly the better result. I took this image only because of the wide range of bright, vivid color. In this case the "USM De-fog" was clearly unnecessary and, as Michel pointed out, counterproductive. I would have left it alone and missed the improvement High Pass provided.

Chas, your 2nd rose is beautiful.

Just to see what happens with your red rose I did a basic levels on it. I think it is very pretty also.

Thanks, Kimi, for this new technique to add to my toolbox! Besides the sharpening, while reading the tutorial I came across something else new to me that I think will be very useful:

"To see the process at work, open an image and duplicate the background layer of the image. If your image has multiple layers, add a new layer at the top of the layer stack, click it to select it and press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + E (Command + Option + Shift + E on the Mac) to fill the top layer with a flattened version of the image – without affecting the other layers."

I didn't know I could do that, but have ended up flattening an image instead. Now I know how to continue without flattening. Cool!
