Kimi,

Steps 3 & 7 in the tutorial say 'Click on Filter from the top tool bar, then select sharpen, then click sharpen.' Is this a full Photoshop thing? What's the purpose of this and in PSE how much sharpening are you supposed to do?

Yes Bayla, in Photoshop sharpening in under the filter menu.
You can sharpen you normal way.

As for the amount, I have a set amount I keep around 85 and 1.4.
Not sure why or how I got there but I don't really move it. (maybe I read it in one of Scott Kelby's books)I always duplicate and if it is too much I lower the opacity. I do a lot of selective sharpening face, eyes, but for that I always use highpass sharpening.

I think it depends more on what type of image you are using. His purpose of sharpening his image is so the image itself does not get lost in all of the textures being applied.

I hope you give it a try....

Whilst my kids were water-skiing I took a photo of these life jackets drying in the sun. Wasn't sure what to do with it, so tried it with this technique. I like the result. Thanks Kimi.

Kimi,
These oak trees were taken at a Plantation home by "The Myrtles". Just drive around the country roads by Lafayette & you will find plenty.

Another enjoyable assignment. Here's mine - taken in the protestant cemetary in Macau. Unfortunately all my cemetary shots seem to be taken on sunny days!
